Off-Network Communications for Future Railway Mobile Communication Systems: Challenges and Opportunities

GSM-R is predicted to be obsoletd by 2030, and a suitable successor needed. Defined the International Union of Railways, Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) contains many future use cases with strict requirements. These should ensure regular communication not only in network coverage but also uncovered scenarios. There still lack standards on off-network FRMCS, so this article focuses intends provide reference direction for standardization. We first comprehensive summary analysis FRMCS. Then we give an overview existing technologies (GSM-R, TETRA, DMR, LTE-V2X, NR-V2X) that may support communication. In addition, simulate evaluate performance technologies. Simulation results show it possible satisfy requirements FRMCS enhancements based LTE-V2X or NR-V2X. Finally, some research directions insights industry academia.
